Our final match of the year took place this week against the Stock Exchange G.S. at Walton Heath on a mild but blustery day. The Lloyd’s team dominated the morning matches, chalking up a strong 5-1 lead by lunchtime.
During a wonderful WHGC lunch in the cosy Fowler Room, the Lloyd’s match manager, Kieron Russell, remarked on his pleasure that this match could again take place (not played in 2020), whilst noting that one of its long-standing supporters, LGC Past President Patrick ‘Spider’ Webb, had sadly passed away earlier this year. We all raised a glass in his memory.
As the afternoon scores came in, it became clear that the SE team had clearly listened to their Captain’s lunchtime words as he urged his team onwards. Lloyd’s usually play well after lunch but the first four matches on the board were all losses for LGC, followed by one LGC win. With the total delicately poised at 6-5, tension built in the clubhouse as the result hinged on the final match. Fortunately for LGC, its last pair arrived to post a half, despite having been 2 down with 3 to play! A fine result, bringing the match to a 6.5 – 5.5 win, the fifth in a row for LGC in this fixture.
This concluding match brings Lloyd’s Golf Club’s tally for the year to 11 wins, 3 draws, 5 losses (plus 6 matches which did not take place). All in all, a pretty respectable year and one in which we were simply glad to get out, play our golf and enjoy each other’s company. Our thanks go to all the match managers for organising, and all the Members who played and supported this wonderful club
